Winter Hay - horses must rely on eating hay throughout the winter because they pretty much must eat all the time to regulate their body temperature, there is no grass, it is a low calorie and low carbohydrate food, and is also the least expensive winter food. During summer droughts, horses are forced to eat hay because the grass has dried up and turned brown, or they live in desert areas where there is no grass.
